FME Reflects on the Legacy of Haiti’s Double Independence Debt

The Foundation for the Memory of Slavery (FME) will organize activities on Thursday, April 17, 2025, to mark the 200th anniversary of the double debt of independence imposed on Haiti. The events planned for this commemoration include speeches by officials, a roundtable discussion, an exhibition, and an artistic performance. The event will take place at the National Archives in the municipality of Saint-Denis, France.

The FME's commemorative activities scheduled for Thursday, April 17, aim to mark the bicentennial of the imposition by King Charles X of France of an "exorbitant indemnity" on Haiti in exchange for the recognition of its independence. The purpose of the commemoration is to revisit this "unprecedented event, the unjust nature of which has never been acknowledged by France," noted the FME.
